Reading Skills
In Grade 8, students work with a wider range of academic texts such as articles, blogs, narratives, and opinion pieces. They develop advanced reading comprehension skills, including identifying tone and the writer’s attitude, making connections between paragraphs, and inferring implied meanings. The program familiarizes students with the Reading section format of the Checkpoint exam, including multiple-choice, matching, and short-answer tasks.
Writing Skills
Students practice writing longer texts, using an appropriate tone for the context and purpose of communication, such as formal emails, opinion essays, or event descriptions. Emphasis is placed on organizing ideas, using academic linking words, and maintaining grammatical and spelling accuracy to enhance writing quality. These writing tasks are aligned with the Writing section requirements of the Checkpoint exam.
Listening Skills
The Grade 8 program includes academically and practically oriented listening activities, such as extended conversations, speeches, and interviews. Students practice identifying specific details, analyzing speakers’ viewpoints, and understanding the purpose and context of the listening material. Practice activities incorporate formats similar to the Checkpoint exam to help students become accustomed to the pace and pressure of the actual test.
Speaking Skills
Students strengthen their ability to express personal opinions clearly, develop reasons and specific examples, and provide appropriate responses in group interactions. Speaking activities such as presentations, debates, and role-play scenarios help students use English more fluently and coherently. While not assessed in the Checkpoint exam, speaking skills play an important role in supporting writing, critical thinking, and confidence in academic English communication.
Use of English (Grammar & Vocabulary)
Grade 8 consolidates and extends students’ language foundation through the use of advanced grammatical structures such as the present perfect continuous, relative clauses, passive voice, and complex comparisons. Vocabulary is expanded through academic topics such as the environment, technology, media, and social issues. Accurate application of language in real-world contexts supports high performance across all four skills.
