Reading Skills
In Grade 9, students engage with longer and more complex academic texts such as commentaries, argumentative essays, and analytical pieces. They practice reading to grasp overall meaning, distinguish between details and arguments, identify the author’s viewpoint, and infer information not explicitly stated. Exposure to tasks involving analysis, evaluation, and synthesizing ideas from multiple passages prepares students for the Reading component of the IGCSE program.
Writing Skills
The Grade 9 program places strong emphasis on advancing academic writing skills. Students learn to create outlines, develop clear arguments, and connect ideas cohesively using academic linking devices. They regularly practice writing in various formats such as emails, opinion essays, information synthesis tasks, and analytical pieces. Attention is given to controlling tone (formal/informal), ensuring grammatical accuracy, correct spelling, and logical structure throughout their writing.
Listening Skills
Students practice listening to extended conversations and monologues with varied accents and a pace similar to the actual exam. Listening materials include academic content, real-life situations, and multi-speaker contexts. They develop skills in detailed listening, identifying viewpoints, determining communicative purposes, and completing multiple-choice and matching tasks in IGCSE exam format. At this stage, listening requires a high level of concentration and accurate retention of information.
Speaking Skills
Grade 9 is when students begin to develop structured, academic speaking skills. They learn to present personal viewpoints, deliver topic-based presentations, develop arguments with supporting examples, and participate in discussions, responding logically to others’ opinions. This serves as essential preparation for the Speaking Endorsement component of the IGCSE examination.
Use of English (Grammar & Vocabulary)
Students continue to consolidate and expand advanced grammar knowledge, including second and third conditional sentences, noun clauses, inversion, and academic sentence structures. Vocabulary development is academically oriented, covering themes such as science and technology, education, health, media, and the environment. Mastery of accurate and flexible language use enables students to transition smoothly into the Cambridge IGCSE ESL program.
