1.General Introduction & Learning Outcomes
In Grade 1, Social Studies helps students understand what is closest to them: where they belong (family – classroom – community) and why rules matter for safety, respect, and cooperation. At this level, children build the foundation of civic habits—being responsible for their actions, working well with others, and practicing fairness.
By the end of Grade 1, students can:
• Describe their role and responsibilities at home and in class (e.g., keeping order, lining up, helping classmates).
• Explain in simple terms why rules and fairness are important.
• Identify key community helpers and basic community services.
• Distinguish between needs and wants, and understand “goods and services” through daily-life examples.
2. Knowledge Overview
• Community around me: family, classroom, school, neighborhood.
• Civics foundations: rules, fairness, responsibilities.
• Basic geography: familiar places, simple directions, basic map symbols.
• Basic economics: needs vs. wants; goods vs. services (daily routines and simple shopping situations).
3. Learning & Teaching Methods
• Learning through stories and everyday situations: “What would happen if we had no rules in our classroom?”
• Role-play: acting out community helpers (doctor, firefighter, librarian, etc.).
• Mini inquiry: observe – ask – explain (early inquiry habits in an age-appropriate way).
