Course Description
In the ELA Grade 2 program, students begin to build a strong foundation in academic English through the integration of the four core skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Learners are introduced to a wide range of text types such as realistic fiction, narratives, poetry, photo journals, letters, scientific texts, and modern media forms like blogs and online articles. Through these texts, students develop essential reading comprehension skills including identifying main ideas and details, making inferences, comparing and contrasting information, and connecting knowledge to real-life experiences.
Speaking skills are strengthened through engaging activities such as interviews, group discussions, and presentations. Writing focuses on producing personal narratives, descriptive paragraphs, letters, and instructional texts, with step-by-step guidance to ensure clarity and confidence.
At the same time, students expand their vocabulary and phonics knowledge within familiar cross-curricular themes that connect to everyday life. By the end of the course, learners are able to express ideas clearly in both academic and daily communication, preparing them to confidently continue their English-medium education journey.
Learning Content
- Genres

The program introduces long vowels, consonant blends, diphthongs, r-controlled vowels, and special ending sounds to support accurate pronunciation and spelling skills. - Reading Strategies
Learners practice key strategies such as identifying main ideas and details, comparing and contrasting, making inferences, visualizing content, connecting with personal experiences, and recognizing cause-and-effect relationships in texts. - Thinking Maps
Students use a variety of visual organizers—such as Venn diagrams, main idea-detail maps, sequencing charts, classification charts, and cause-and-effect diagrams—to retain and organize information effectively while analyzing key elements of texts. - Oral Projects
Speaking activities include themed performances and informational presentations, allowing students to practice expressing ideas, exchanging information, and using academic language with confidence. - Writing Projects
Throughout the course, students are guided to write in different forms such as personal narratives, descriptive paragraphs, friendly letters, procedural texts, literary responses, and informational writing. These activities develop clear, structured, and effective writing skills.
Learning Methodology
The Grade 2 ELA program is designed to strengthen core language skills through a balanced combination of direct instruction and interactive, student-centered learning. Lessons are carefully sequenced to support the development of reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, using engaging tools such as interactive videos, storytelling, illustrations, thinking maps, and quick-check quizzes.
Learning is reinforced through practical activities and communicative tasks, including discussions and collaborative exchanges that encourage students to express ideas, ask questions, and engage in meaningful interaction. Writing projects are integrated throughout the course, guiding students to practice sentence construction, organize their thoughts, and express themselves clearly across genres such as personal narratives, descriptions, and simple procedural texts.
In this model, the teacher’s role shifts from daily direct instruction to that of a mentor and facilitator. Teachers meet with students periodically to provide guidance, clarify concepts, offer feedback, and encourage learners to apply language skills independently and effectively in their academic tasks.
