At\u00a0Saline Area Schools<\/a>\u00a0in Michigan, Technology Director Jay Grossman is all in on sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve taken a lot of steps to add technology to our district that makes it run better, more efficiently and at a lower cost,\u201d he says. That includes solar panels at the middle and high schools, a shift from fluorescent to LED lighting, and a host of other measures.<\/span><\/p>\n

From energy consumption to\u00a0electronic parts waste<\/a>, technology isn\u2019t always Earth friendly. But technology can also be part of the solution, helping districts meet their sustainability goals while simultaneously\u00a0trimming expenses<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Investing in Technologies That Reduce Waste and Benefit Budgets<\/span><\/h2>\n

Among other initiatives, Saline Area Schools has replaced its toner-based printers with inkjet technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe moved over to the\u00a0Epson<\/a>\u00a0Workforce M21000 and\u00a0C5000<\/a>\u00a0color machines this summer. They have proved to be more efficient than our old toner machines; they work faster, and they use less energy to run,\u201d Grossman says. \u201cAfter the initial warmup, they\u2019re using about 75% less energy than our old toner copy machines.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s a significant cost savings here, and there are\u00a0other environmental benefits as well<\/a>. Grossman\u2019s team doesn\u2019t have to replace fusers \u2014 which wind up in landfills \u2014 and the MFPs have replaceable ink pack systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Printers are not the only school essential that can be upgraded to support sustainability. Charging carts are another example. They typically rely on alternating-current adapters that are not only inefficient but also contribute significantly to electronic waste. They break often, adding to the ever-expanding global footprint of e-waste.<\/span><\/p>\n

JAR Systems<\/a>\u00a0addresses this with its Quick-Sense USB-C Charging Retrofit Kits. By getting rid of the AC adapters, schools trim their e-waste and save on the routine $35 to $45\u00a0expense of replacement parts<\/a>. Moreover, the company\u2019s USB-C cart can optimize energy use to dial down consumption, says JAR Systems Chief Revenue Officer Mike Faherty.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUSB-C has the capability to be a more efficient way to deliver power,\u201d he says. \u201cOur modules actually will sense what the power needs are of all the devices within the cart and will only deliver enough power to bring that device to a full charge, so there\u2019s less power consumption overall.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Finding Sustainable Solutions at the Building Level<\/span><\/h2>\n

Building management systems are another area where schools can leverage technology to improve energy efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n

At\u00a0Schneider Electric<\/a>, Tyler Haak points to digitization as the starting point. \u201cAny school district can be working to digitize what have traditionally been analog systems so they can get that information and that data in a central spot,\u201d says Haak, vice president of services.<\/span><\/p>\n

With\u00a0a digital building automation system<\/a>, schools can look to optimize their energy use. Today, \u201cautomated fault detection diagnostics and AI come into play,\u201d says Haak. These tools support the predictive maintenance that delivers maximum efficiency. \u201cThat can help us really put a dent in energy consumption, because HVAC systems can account for upward of 35% of energy consumption in the building.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At the cutting edge are tools like CO2 sensors. \u201cCarbon dioxide is a good proxy for how many people are in a space,\u201d says Haak. A modern sensor can read CO2 levels to determine occupancy, \u201cand it will allow the system to tune itself, so it\u2019s always providing the appropriate amount of outside air. You have to treat that outside air with heating or\u00a0cooling<\/a>, and that\u2019s where a lot of your energy consumption comes from.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Identifying Resources and Opportunities for Sustainable Upgrades<\/span><\/h2>\n

For schools looking to leverage technology in support of their sustainability goals, Grossman says it makes sense to explore the options. \u201cEspecially if there are new construction projects, be sure to look for new sustainable methods for heating and cooling,\u201d he notes.<\/span><\/p>\n

As schools pursue sustainable tech solutions, they can look to\u00a0the E-rate program<\/a>\u00a0to help fund certain upgrades, Grossman says. And school IT leaders can\u00a0work closely with their vendors<\/a>\u00a0to find the solutions that best support efforts to both trim budgets and deliver greener approaches. \u201cDo your research when you\u2019re interviewing these vendors, and see what technologies they offer,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n
